I can't say personally if it's changed much, though if anyone has some first hand experience I'd also love to hear as I'm in the same boat as you in rather liking the premise. It's my understanding that Stardock treat it as a major mark on them and the company. any put quite a bit of work in turning it around. If I remember correctly the hired on a guy who worked either on Civ IV itself or one of the major mods.

So he basically became head of the project and they put a fair amount into making the game properly patched. There's an expansion due out soonish too which I believe will be free to original E:WoM players. So while the game released pretty horrid state they really seem to be heavily rectifying their mistakes. A commendable effort. Not everyone would do that.Especially as it kinda violated umpteen points of their 'Gamers Bill of Rights' they put out a couple years ago:/. This is not entirely correct. Derek Paxton, the guy they hired who created the Civ IV mod Fall From Heaven, has not been working on War of Magic. He is currently the head producer on 'Fallen Enchantress'.FE is a turn-based strategy game set in the universe of E:WoM and that uses the same engine, but it is a vastly different game.
It is not an expansion, but a stand alone game. It was originally going to just fix all of the problems from WoM, but Paxton has completely changed things up. Stardock also hired the lead designer of Civ V and a professional fantasy writer to work on the game. They are counting on it undoing all of the bad publicity they gained from WoM. So far it looks amazing. As for War of Magic, it is definitely a lot better now. The graphical glitches are fixed, AI is improved, magic is more streamlined, combat has been balanced.
But I still almost never play it. It just isn't what I was looking for. Here's hoping Fallen Enchantress catches my eye! Seeing as it is free to anyone you purchased War of Magic, I will be giving it a shot. I was a huge fan of Fall From Heaven and trust Paxton a lot.
He knows how to make a good fantasy game. Honestly, calling the issues 'balance issues' is a massive, massive understatement.Firstly - I wanted Elemental to be good.
For years it was my most anticipated game. I pre-ordered it more than a year before it came out. I was very excited. But the problem is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE GAME DESIGN. I mean, Brad Wardell seemed to just throw in just about everything that came into his head.
Any feature from any game he's ever liked is in this game, it seems, and at the end of the day it all becomes noise. As someone who loves turn based games, especially ones with turn based tactical combat, I was totally heart-broken by this game. A year later, I've tried it again, and it's honestly not substantially better.

I still give the game a strong thumbs-down. Play Master of Magic instead. You reminded me of this game. Why did you remind me of this game? )=Huge hopes for this thing.

Pre-ordered well in advance. Picked it up, and was utterly disappointed. It had way more issues than simply perforamnce and balance issues. The graphics were just bad, even for the time. It wasn't a matter of the style, but rather that they were just done poorly. The GUI was atrocious as well. I don't know what happened between what was initially planned and what was released, but despite getting numerous notices of how its been updated again and again and the re-releases and such, I can't be bothered to even look at it again.
