I have a 495 that belongs to a DS114EC. Afterreviewing some schematics in an article by Dick Seymore, on autostars onMike Weasner's site I realized that the 495 I had contained two romchips, just like a 497.
Downloading the 2.1ek and then trying to installwith the updater would not work for me. I kept getting wrong type ofautostar errors. Reading through the documentation that came with the2.4 updater, it said that there was an Autostar.ROM and a Dbase.rom filethat was to remain in the EPHEMERIDES directory to be able to restorethe autostar if there was some type of failure. So I installedthe 2.4 updater, hooked up the 495 to the serial cable, started theupdater, and just pressed Send To New Software to Autostar. I did nottry to download any new firmware from the web. It began to download newpages of firmware to the autostar. 25 min later it restarted with 2.1Ek.If you have a bunch of objects stored (comets,tours Sats etc), you maywant to back them up firstThe only way I know to tell if you have a 1 meg 495 is to open it up andlook.
Maybe someone has a simple software solution to check for 1 meg.Or you could just try and update. I do not know the consequences offailure. You could end up with a ETX autostar or a plastic box with akeypad and a really cool cat 5 cable for your laptop.

People withETXs and LX90 scopes are buying them up as spares and trying to upgradethem to 497s. There is a catch 22 to this: The 495 will not willinglyupgrade using power from an ETX or LX90 while it still contains the old495 version of firmware/software.
As soon as the 495 firmware sees a nonDS type scope attached the autostar will refuse to do anything. Thisproblem will go away once the firmware is upgraded to the ETX/497versions. There is a way around this problem. The work arounds are: 1.Borrow somebodys DS scope for power, then upgrade. Build a power boxand use it for power during the upgrade. This may cause improper reset.If this option is used, perform a manual reset after the upgrade, whenfirst connected to the target scope. Use the Safe Load procedure asspelled out in.Once upgraded it can be changed to any other version of ETX/497firmware.Also check your version of firmware before upgrading.
There have been acouple of instances where the 495s contained the newer software and willwork the upper end scopes right out of the box.Remember to retrain the motors.
