I've never used Skype with any other PC, or any other version of Windows, and I have the version of Skype specifically built for Win 10 that you have to get through the Win 10 store.I cannot find my chat logs anywhere on the PC.Google searching has recommended two possible locations. There is no folder with my username, and the other location where the chat logs are supposed to be, 'doesn't exist'. I can find all the media files, pics, vids, etc that have been shared between me and contacts, but not the actual conversations.I can log into the app and see everything in the chat window, but I am using Skype to help a friend with comic book storyboards, and I don't want to scroll back two weeks to copy and paste 2 hours worth of dialogue. Can anyone tell me where on the PC it's actually located, or how to back them up? I assume with 'doesn't exist' you probably refer to AppDataSkype folder? The folder is there, but AppData folder is always very well hidden.Skype saves the chat logs into a database file (that's inside AppDataSkype), not to a text file like some do. You can back up that but it's not easily readable by anything except Skype. If you want it to more readable format, you can export chat history from the Skype app itself.

Take a look at thisThese two provide step by step instructions:'Can I back up my chat history and transfer it from one computer to another?' 'How do I export my chat history to CSV?' CSV file opens in apps like Excel, if you want a regular text file, you can just open Notepad and quite easily copy the lines which you need from Excel.

Did you actually go to AppDataSkype folder and see it yourself there is no folder with your username or did you just use the search feature built-in to Windows? If the latter, go to that actual folder. AppData folder contains files and folders which are crucial for Windows and other software you use, because of that, everything in there is well hidden even from the search feature. Unless you've specifically enabled easier access to those files and folders, even the search feature is not going to find those. Classic shell windows 7 start button. Alright, Checked this myself from Windows 10 PC now.

Microsoft has made a huge mess out of something which could have been so simple. You can find the files related to Win 10 Store version of Skype from%localappdata%PackagesMicrosoft. SkypeAppkzf8qxf38zg5cLocalStateThis is the second location you talked about which didn’t exist?

This is how you can get to that folder:-Press and hold Windows key on your keyboard, then press R-Copy paste%localappdata%PackagesMicrosoft. SkypeAppkzf8qxf38zg5cLocalState to the field on the Run window and click OK. The folder opens in new window.-If for some reason that doesn't work, just type%localappdata% to the Run window and click OK. Then manually work your way to the correct path.

Inside 'Microsoft. SkypeAppkzf8qxf38zg5c' is everything related to the Win 10 Store Skype, so that folder is there if you have the app installed. Inside LocalState folder there is a folder “live#.SKYPEUSERNAME” or something similar with your username on it, for me it’s “live#3aSKYPEUSERNAME”. In that folder there is “skype. Db” file which is the database file which contains the chat log along with many other things. If you want to make a backup for the sake of having a backup.

Backup the whole folder. Here comes the bad news if you want that conversation in easier format, you basically can’t get it easily from the Skype. Db file, and that’s the only place where Skype stores the chat log locally. Microsoft in their infinite wisdom also decided to not include the export feature I mentioned earlier to the Win 10 Store version of Skype. So if you want to get the conversation in to a text file, you either have to scroll the log inside the app and copy paste it to text file. Or you have to install the regular desktop version of Skype, log in there and then use the export feature.

Skype saves 30 days of chat log to cloud, so if the conversation was 2 weeks ago, it will be shown up to regular desktop version after you’ve logged in. One more option is to use app like DB Browser for SQLite or similar, open the Skype. Db file in there and browse the database from there. However that’s not the most user friendly solution since database files aren’t really meant for something like this.

Do you have a normal laptop or desktop PC with Windows 10 or one of those devices which come with Windows 10 S? If you have 10 S, then you are forced to use Win 10 Store only and if you have regular Windows 10, you can install any application.

However on regular 10 there is setting under Settings - Apps - Apps & Features - Installing apps which might be set to allow installations only from the store. If you are able to change that, then the Windows will allow you to install whatever you want.If you have regular 10 and manage to fix the issue from the settings, then go to and get the 'Skype for Desktop' version. It might try to suggest the 'app version' first, but you can get the desktop version from there too.
